Dennis Miskić is a student of political science at the University of Vienna and freelance journalist regularly contributing to German and Austrian media. In 2021 he initiated the “Austrian Service Abroad” program at the Srebrenica Memorial Center and worked in Srebrenica for a year. For his work he was awarded the “Austrian Servant Abroad of the Year” Award.
Healing the Past, Building the Future: One Volunteer’s Mission in Srebrenica
Imagine you sit in front of a world map and get to pick any place in the world. That’s where you will go and live for a year. Harun Čandić sat at home one day and looked at that map showing the 60 countries where he could go volunteer for a year, including such places New York, Cape Town, and even New Zealand. However, with the world at his fingertips, he chose the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

A Heroic Fight Against Death
On July 14th, 1995, Bosnian Serb soldiers shot Mevludin Orić at the Orahovac execution site in Zvornik Municipality – one of several locations where mass executions were carried out during the genocide in and around Srebrenica.
