Jelke holds a Master’s in Conflict Studies from Utrecht University and a Master’s in European and International Relations from the Centre international de formation européenne. Her interest in the Balkans was sparked by growing up in The Hague, the city of justice, peace, and the ICTY, as well as by the role of the Dutch Battalion, part of the United Nations Protection Force, in the Bosnian War. In recent years, she has focused her research on memory and identity culture, transitional justice, and the social-psychological dimensions of conflict. She has examined, for example, the role of Srebrenica in Dutch public memory as well as the commodification of war heritage in Sarajevo through the city’s war tours.
